Petersham Horticultural Society is hosting two events for its members (and neighbours) during September as part of the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Dig Together Day.
This national campaign, organised by the UK's leading gardening charity, the RHS, celebrates the nation's gardening knowledge. This year, more clubs than ever will be holding their own RHS Dig Together Day events throughout the month of September. Dig Together Day aims to get more people to discover a love for gardening and in turn, boost club membership.

Saturday 17th September 19:00 to 21:00 Evening talk, drinks and canapés - "The History of Parks and Green space (wild or nature and looking into the future) - David Thorpe. Petersham Village Hall. Bute Avenue. Off Sudbrook Lane

Petersham Horticultural Society are delighted to announce their 105th SUMMER SHOW is to be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd July 2010 from 2.15pm
You are invite to join the festivities at Petersham Village Hall, Bute Avenue, off Sudbrook Lane and have fun by entering a competition class for flowers, fruit, vegetables, photography, cookery, arts and crafts, or a class in the children's section. The Show will have all entries on display and there will be a range of stalls including cakes, plants, books and tombola (donations welcome and gratefully received on the morning of the show) plus entertainment like a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy Show and face painting
There are nearly 100 categories in which you are invited to exhibit: from flowers, fruits, vegetables and cookery to arts and crafts and of of course the junior classes for young people up to sixteen years old.
Last year, children attractions included a Face Painter a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy show and sideshow games such as Hook-a-duck and we are likely to see these and others again this year.
For the adults there will be all the traditional stalls including Cakes, Bottles, Books, Bric-a-brac, Tombola, the Raffle and Plants.
Live music will set just the right relaxed atmosphere for the afternoon. There will be Maypole dancers and live music will add the the atmosphere.

Easter Services at St Peter’s

You are invited to participate in a series of monthly talks about the Christian faith which will take place at Petersham Village Hall, Bute Avenue starting on Tuesday 10th May. Each meeting runs from 7.30pm – 9.00pm and begins with a light meal.

Village Gardens to Open on May 23rd

Make a note in your diary: On Sunday, May 23rd the villagers of Petersham will be throwing open their gardens to the public to help raise money for the Petersham Trust.
This year a record number of gardens will be opening and visits to all are included in the ticket price of just £10 per adult, or £8 if purchased in advance. For children under 16 entry is free. Gardens are open from 11am to 6pm, with last tickets sales at 5pm.
There is a wealth of variety, size and style to enjoy; with gardens ranging from the grand and ornate to simple, cottage gardens, but all have a wonderful mix of flower, shrubs and trees. Teas and delicious home made cakes will be on sale in the Village Hall in Bute Avenue from midday.
The privately owned gardens are all within a ten minute walk from the Richmond Park Petersham Gate entrance, opposite the Dysart Arms. Buses 65 and 371 from Richmond station stop at the Dysart. Directions to the gardens will be displayed throughout the village.
Advance tickets can be bought at the reduced price of £8 from Jo Bradley on 020 8948 6936 or via email at jo_bradley@btconnect.com. Tickets can also be purchased on the day at any of the participating gardens.
This is the fourth time that this hugely enjoyable and successful venture is being held, and many of the gardens featured this year are new to the scheme.
All money raised goes to the Petersham Trust, a charitable foundation whose aims are to maintain the world famous view over the water meadows from Richmond Hill, by conserving and protecting the meadows and the herd of cows that graze there. Past donations have enabled the Trust to refurbish the Victorian Milking Parlour and build a new barn for the cows.

The Friends of Ham Lands is a voluntary group dedicated to protecting Ham Lands as a place of natural beauty, public enjoyment and an ecological site of great value. Please come along to find out more.
The next Friends of Ham Lands meeting will be held on the Thursday 17th June at St Thomas Aquinas Church Hall, Ham Common.
Ham Lands has been described as one of the most significant and extensive stretches of riverside historic landscape and public amenity open space of any city in the world. It stretches from Teddington Lock, near the Hawker Centre alongside the Thames to Petersham Meadows. It is used recreationally by walkers, riders and many others. Lately it has been neglected and its value in terms of recreational use and environmental biodiversity and ecology been largely forgotten.

St Peter’s Church Open Day 18th April 2010

There will be artefacts from the archives on display, tours of the churchyard by the sea scouts, and Captain Vancouver will be present to discuss his voyages with visitors! New Local Book Published

It describes the remarkable landscape as well as many of the people who have lived here and their houses, all of which have contributed to making Ham and Petersham one of the most special and attractive areas in Greater London. Intrigue, artists, writers and the first new age commune: there’s more to Ham and Petersham than meets the eye, as new book, The Matchless Vale, uncovers.
Even those born and bred in the green and pleasant corner of Greater London that comprises Ham and Petersham in the borough of Richmond, will uncover numerous surprises and delight in the fascinating images brought together in the new hardback book produced by the Ham and Petersham Association.
The chance to peek behind the wrought-iron gates and high old walls of the many historic and beautiful houses in the area is not to be missed. Nor are the sepia photographs, architectural drawings and oil paintings, illustrating how little Ham and Petersham has changed and why they have such an enduring appeal.
Long before pop stars and actors gravitated to the area, Charles Dickens wrote much of Nicholas Nickleby in Petersham and Constable made drawings of Ham’s trees. The area was a hotspot for political intrigue and radical thinkers as well. The word CABAL, associated with secretive clubs and shady dealings, comes from the initials of the men who met at Ham House to form a group of political advisors to the King in 1668. Equally surprising, the term ‘new age’ was first coined in Ham, to describe the ideals and lifestyle of a group of free-thinkers who formed what would now be called a commune, next to Ham Common.
Few people realise the work that has gone into protecting Ham and Petersham over the years and how different the landscape might have looked. Issues ranging from over-development to cruelty to animals have been shaped by the campaigning of local residents, past and present. In fact, the vista from Richmond Hill, looking out to the river and over Petersham, complete with cows grazing in the meadow, is so special that it is the only view protected by an act of parliament.
Along with the ancient landscape, historic houses and aristocratic early residents are the more recent buildings that are presented, rather refreshingly, as part of a living, evolving area, not a museum where everything should be preserved in aspic. These include a new HUF house in Petersham and the Parkleys development just off Ham Common. That’s not to say that all modernisation has been welcomed, with some less successful developments and poor planning decisions highlighting the need for local residents to protect the area for future generations. Whether you’re interested in architecture, garden design, history, or just curious about this idyllic spot in a bend of the river Thames, The Matchless Vale is a joy to dip into and, with Christmas on the way, is likely to be a well received gift.  Book Review by Holly Willis November 2009

The 102nd Petersham Horticultural Society Village Show held on Saturday 5th July was once more a great success with hundred of entries across the classes: flowers, fruit and vegetable, cookery, arts and crafts and of of course the junior classes.
Reverend Tim Marwood gave out the cups and the show was opened by Mr Darren Harrison, Head of the Russell School

Open Gardens Highlights May 2008

The villagers of of Petersham opened their gardens in May 2008 for the third time in order to raise money for the Petersham Trust. Despite the constant threat of rain the Petersham Open Gardens event on May Bank Holiday was very well attended with an estimated 1200+ visitors who enjoyed the experience of eleven very different gardens.
Thanks to everyone involved - organisers, garden owners, cake makers, tea providers and volunteers - a good time was had by all.
The events happens bi-annually and will be held again in May 2010.

101st Flower Show & Fete July 2007

The 101st Petersham Horticultural Society Village Show luckily fell on one of the rare dry and sunny days in July 2007. Despite the miserable weather leading up to the Show entries were good and there was an excellent turnout of produce for the flowers, fruit and vegetable classes.
Thee Cookery classes had particularly high entries and the standard was very high. The Art and Crafts had entries from all the local Schools and Nurseries in Ham & Petersham. It was very pleasing to see all the artwork especially as the Society is keen to promote links with the younger community.
For the first time this year rosettes were awarded to those placed in the top three of each class. This seemed to be a very popular innovation and later the hall was filled with people proudly displaying their rosettes!
The Maypole dancers from the Russell School gave their usual excellent display and drew quite a large crowd. Children attractions included a Face Painter (even for some very old children!), a bouncy castle, Punch and Judy show and sideshow games such as Hook-a-duck.
For the adults there all the traditional stalls including Cakes, Bottles, Books, Bric-a-brac, Tombola, the Raffle and Plants. Live music was provided by a three-piece band that set just the right relaxed atmosphere for the afternoon. The afternoon was concluded by the prize giving and cups were awarded by Penny Waheed, Petersham Horticultural Society President and the Reverend Richard Bentley.
